The Taylor Center for Missions Computing provides opportunities for students to develop and employ their technical skills in direct service to the global missions community. Throughout the current academic year (2014-2015), we have partnered with Tiny Hands International, which combats human trafficking in Nepal.
Tiny Hands, founded by Taylor alumni, works to prevent women and children from being trafficked into the sex trade. Tiny Hands estimates that 30,000 people are trafficked into India from Nepal and Bangladesh every year to be sold as slaves. Through transit monitoring programs, Tiny Hands has resuced thousands of women and children from a life of torture and unimaginable brutality.
We're joining the fight to help Tiny Hands combat the human trafficking industry in Nepal. Students working with the Center for Missions Computing will use their skills to contribute to this cause and make a positive difference in Nepal. We especially want to help Tiny Hands capture and analyze data on traffickers, victims, and trafficking patterns. By turning data into actionable information, Tiny Hands can be even more effective in their life-saving work.
Having been focused on Nepal since last fall, we were deeply saddened by the news of the deadly earthquake that struck Nepal recently. Fortunately, Tiny Hands personnel are safe and are working hard to help relieve the suffering around them in Kathmandu and elsewhere. According to Executive Director Doug Dworak, Tiny Hands expects trafficking will "increase quite a bit," which is "exactly why we are gearing up to counter what will surely come."
The Next Step
In partnership with Tiny Hands, we're developing an application called Dream Suite. Dream Suite brings the power of networking and databases to the work, allowing Tiny Hands to track and locate those involved with human trafficking, both villains and victims. The initial version of Dream Suite is already tracking basic information on the Nepal-India border, where women and children are trafficked daily.
But we need to go faster. Tiny Hands has identified numerous features they would like to add to Dream Suite to make their work more effective. Just a few of the features planned for Dream Suite will:
Most of the work on Dream Suite has been done by students in regular classes; this work will continue. In addition, we want to engage students outside of the classroom through student employment and paid internships to accelerate the development of Dream Suite.
What's needed is the funding to support Dream Suite development. That's where you come in. Support Taylor students and the partnership between the Center for Missions Computing and Tiny Hands to help eliminate trafficking in Nepal by funding the development of Dream Suite.
There are several ways in which you can help:
